ADDIS ABABA- The Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed welcomed German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on a working visit to Ethiopia as the two leaders held discussions at the Grand National Palace in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa on Thursday.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Abiy and Chancellor Scholz discussed a wide range of issues, including strengthening bilateral relations between Ethiopia and Germany, economic cooperation, and regional security.
The leaders also discussed the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia’s Northern Tigray region, after the recent peace deal in Pretoria, South Africa which ended two-year long bloody war between government forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) which led to the cessation of hostilities and the disarmament of
TPLF, resulting the an ongoing peace process.
Meanwhile, the German Chancellor lauded the Ethiopian government’s peace initiatives which led to the peace deal and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Prime Minister Abiy briefed Chancellor Scholz on Ethiopia’s efforts to promote the peace process and also emphasized the need for support from the international community to address the humanitarian situation in Tigray.
The visit by Chancellor Scholz is the first by a German leader to Ethiopia in over a decade and reflects the growing importance of Ethiopia as a strategic partner for Germany in Africa.
Following their discussions, Prime Minister Abiy and Chancellor Scholz held a joint press conference, where they reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and working together on regional and global issues of mutual concern.
