DJIBOUTI – Ismail Omar Guelleh, the longstanding dictator of Djibouti, was spotted enjoying a family holiday in Bordeaux, France  according to sources.

Guelleh’s leisurely getaway comes shortly after the completion of a routine health check-up in Paris, which added to speculation about his future in Djiboutian politics.

Sources told the Horn Examiner that Guelleh and his family were seen strolling along the picturesque streets of Bordeaux, indulging in local cuisine. Guelleh, known for his authoritarian rule, appeared relaxed during the vacation, which has raised eyebrows both within Djibouti and among international observers.

While details regarding his health remain undisclosed, the timing of the visit has sparked speculation about the 75-year-old leader’s well-being and his plans for the future of Djibouti.

Djibouti’s political landscape has been under the tight control of President Ismail Omar Guelleh since his assumption of power in 1999. Taking over from his uncle, Hassan Gouled Aptidon, Guelleh has maintained a firm grip on Djiboutian politics, solidifying his position and shaping the country’s trajectory over the past two decades.

He has been elected to four consecutive terms as President, with the last election in April 2021 marred by allegations of voter suppression and a lack of credible opposition.

Djibouti, a small but strategically important nation located in the Horn of Africa, is a key player in global trade and hosts military bases for several foreign powers, including the United States, China and France.

Guelleh’s regime has faced criticism for its human rights record, including allegations of political repression, media censorship, corruption and suppression of dissent.
