Mogadishu – Catriona Laing has been appointed as the new Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Somalia, replacing James Swan.
Laing is no stranger to the country, having previously worked there as a senior member of the United Nations Operation in Somalia II (UNOSOM II) in the early 1990s.
During her previous stint in Somalia, UNOSOM II faced accusations of failing the country, with some critics pointing to the mission’s inability to restore peace and stability to the war-torn nation.
Laing’s appointment comes at a time when Somalia is still grappling with the aftermath of years of conflict, including ongoing violence, political instability and a humanitarian crisis.
In her new role, Laing will be tasked with leading the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) and coordinating the international community’s efforts to support the country’s political and economic development.
She brings with her extensive experience in the field of international development and diplomacy, having previously served in senior roles at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the United Nations Development Programme.
The appointment of Laing has elicited mixed reactions. While some have expressed confidence in her ability to effectively lead UNSOM and collaborate with the government and other stakeholders, others have criticized her for her previous leadership role in the UN mission in Somalia before the civil war, which was deemed ineffective in preventing the country from descending into prolonged civil unrest.
