In a significant development, Kenya has flagged off the first consignment of anchovies, a small, oily fish popular in many cuisines destined for China at a ceremony in the coastal town of Kwale on Tuesday.
The event marked an important milestone in the development of Kenya’s blue economy and the strengthening of ties between China and African nations.

FEI ShengChao, the Chinese ambassador to Somalia, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration between China and Africa in the blue economy sector.

He acknowledged Somalia as a key player in the initiative, highlighting its extensive coastline, which is the longest on the African continent. Ambassador ShengChao emphasized the potential for further cooperation between the two nations, with the aim of benefiting their respective populations in various areas.

The Chinese Blue Economy Initiative has garnered interest and participation from several African countries, including Somalia in recent years.

This initiative focuses on harnessing the sustainable potential of ocean resources to drive economic growth, job creation, and environmental conservation. By leveraging their respective strengths and resources, China and African nations seek to unlock the vast potential of the blue economy for mutual benefit.

Ambassador FEI Shengchao, the Chinese ambassador to Somalia, commented on the Kenyan initiative of shipping anchovy from Kenya to China, saying, “When the blue economy is mentioned, the name of another familiar and brotherly African country also comes to mind, which has the longest coastline on the African continent.”

The familiar country that Shengchao is referring is Somalia. He also noted that, there is a potential for collaboration between Somalia and China and the existence of numerous opportunities for mutual benefit between the citizens of both nations.
