Mogadishu – In a significant breakthrough in the fight against terrorism, the Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has successfully foiled a a terrorist attack plot by the extremist group Al-Shabab which would supposedly hit Beerta Nabada Garden, a popular public park in the country’s capital, Mogadishu on the weekend, the agency said on Monday.

The park is known for its popularity among residents who frequently gather there, particularly on weekends.

The botched attack plot was officially confirmed in a statement issued by NISA, which said that the security forces were able to apprehend suicide vests and individuals, identified as the supposed assailants in raids conducted in Mogadishu.

The individuals who are currently in an intelligence prison had reportedly devised a sophisticated plan to carry out an assault on the park, with the aim of causing indiscriminate harm on the  civilians who regularly visit the park for recreational purposes, the agency said.

Acting upon a secret security tip-off, the timely intervention by the Somali intelligence operatives, has led to the disruption of the attack plot before it could be executed.

Al-Shabab, an extremist group with links to Al-Qaeda, has been responsible for numerous deadly attacks in Somalia in the past.

The group is fighting to overthrow the internationally recognized Somali government and impose its own harsh rule.
The terrorist group’s attacks often target civilians, government officials, and security forces.

Located in the heart of Mogadishu, Beerta Nabada (Peace Park), known for its serene atmosphere and beautiful surroundings is a popular spot for families, friends, and visitors to enjoy outdoor activities, providing a much-needed respite for the city’s residents.

The success in foiling the latest attack plot which followed a combination of surveillance, intelligence gathering by the Somali intelligence is seen as a major breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to fight the terrorism threats in Somalia.

The Horn of Africa nation has been grappling with security challenges posed by the persistent and violent terror campaigns by al-Shabaab for over a decade, making the latest achievement all the more crucial.

Over the years, the Somali government with the support of its international partners has been actively involved in combating Al-Shabaab across the country, that have led to the dismantling of the group’s infrastructure and disruption of its activities.

In addition to that, the government also continues an ongoing military offensive that has liberates significant territories from al-Shabaab, including major strongholds that the group had controlled for almost two decades.

However, maintaining and securing liberated territory remains a key challenge in the fight against the terror group. which has subsequently overrun several military bases and looted significant amounts of military equipment and weapons in recent months as allied government and local forces withdrew.
