A member of the Djibouti Opposition Coalition known as USN, Nasser Abdillahi Boulaleh, remains in detention without any formal charges, his family told Horn Examiner.

He was arrested upon his arrival from overseas on Tuesday and has yet to be released or informed about the reasons for his arrest.

The arrest of Boulaleh follows a series of arrests and detentions targeting opposition leaders and activists in Djibouti. Human Rights organizations have expressed deep concern over the government’s actions, citing a systematic campaign to stifle dissent and undermine democratic processes in the country.

The Djibouti Opposition Parties has been vocal in its opposition to the government and has faced repeated crackdowns. Despite the challenges they face, opposition figures and activists continue to call for greater political freedoms, democracy, and respect for human rights.

On April 17 , Djibouti Intelligence also arrested Mustafa Ahmed Ali, a Djibouti-Belgian politician shortly after his arrival from Belgium. However, he was subsequently expelled and deported back to Brussels.

The tiny Horn of African nation led by President Ismail Guelleh, who has been in power since 1999, has been accused of suppressing political dissent, curbing press freedom and cracking down on opposition figures during his lengthy tenure. His iron grip on power has raised concerns among democratic activists and human rights advocates, who argue that political freedoms and fundamental rights are being undermined.
