In a heart-pounding moment, Mohad Salad, Director of the Somali National Intelligence and Colonel Hassan Ali Nur, the Chairman of the country’s Military Court, have narrowly escaped capture by the notorious extremist group, Al-Shabab, officials said on on Monday.
Salad and Nur were aboard a helicopter which had been en route to the recently liberated town of Gal’ad, and was still under the control of the government before their flight took off from Dhusamareb when they received the urgent mid-flight alert that the group had retaken the strategically important location.
The shocking alert came just a few minutes before the helicopter was supposed to make landing in Gal’ad.
Acting swiftly, the two officials immediately alerted the helicopter’s Captain, prompting a rapid change in course away from Gal’ad, it’s original destination towards Mogadishu, thereby evading what could have been a dangerous situation.
The town of Gal’ad, which had recently been liberated from Al-Shabab’s grip, had fallen back into the hands of the extremist group for the third time since the military offensive started, catching government officials off guard.
The recapture of the town in Galgadud region by Al-Shabab underscores the group’s persistent threat and its ability to swiftly regain control over strategic areas.
Meanwhile, Colonel Hassan Ali Nur, the long-serving head of the Somali Military Court is no stranger to Al- Shabab’s threats.
As the Chairman of the Military Court, he has overseen legal proceedings involving many members of the terrorist organization including multiple cases that resulted in convictions and subsequent executions of Al-Shabab members who were found guilty of various crimes.
This has undoubtedly placed Nur among the top targets on Al-Shabab’s list of government officials to capture or eliminate.
The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the Somali Government in maintaining control over territories liberated from extremist groups.
According to security experts, the incident is also a stark reminder of the relentless efforts by al- Shabab to regain influence and control over key areas liberated by the government forces in the ongoing military offensive to oust militants from territories still under their control in the country.
