NAIROBI – In a significant development within the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), South Sudan has emerged as the leading contender in a race against Somalia for the body’s Sudan Peace Envoy position amid fierce negotiations and high-stakes lobbying.
The sought-after position holds significant influence over regional affairs and conflict resolution, making it a prime target for IGAD Member States, each vying to see their candidate assume the role. With both South Sudan and Somalia fielding their own contenders, the competition has been nothing short of intense.
Diplomatic sources close to the negotiations have told the Horn Examiner that Somalia’s campaign for the position is on shaky ground, leaving it at risk of losing out on the opportunity.
The country’s perceived lack of strong diplomatic influence within the regional body and poor campaigning has seemingly weakened their chances in the tightly-contested race, they said.
Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda have thrown their support behind South Sudan, while Djibouti, the current Chairman of IGAD, has proposed extending Ambassador Ismael Wais’ role from leading peace efforts in South Sudan to Sudan. However, that suggestion has faced significant opposition from most IGAD members.
Diplomats say that Djibouti’s actions not only betray Somalia but also undermine Somalia’s plans in favor of its own candidate.
South Sudan, on the other hand, has managed to build momentum and support as a front-runner for the significant envoy position. With it’s reputation as a significant player in the East African region, the South Sudanese government has garnered backing from various quarters in the IGAD Member States.
The race between the two countries vying to secure the diplomatic post has been escalating in recent weeks, with both see it as a strategic opportunity to strengthen their influence within the IGAD region.
IGAD, an eight-member regional trade bloc in East Africa, plays a major role in addressing economic, political and security issues within the region.
On the other hand, Somalia’s candidacy has been met with mixed reactions. While some IGAD members lauded its willingness to actively participate in regional initiatives, concerns have been raised about the country’s internal security situation and its ability to handle additional diplomatic responsibilities effectively.
The successful candidate will be entrusted with mediating and facilitating efforts towards lasting peace and stability in Sudan.
