    The Horn Examiner Report

In what is expected to be a pivotal moment for Turkiye’s political landscape, the nation is set to hold its presidential election on Sunday (today).

President Raccep Tayyeb Erdogan, who has consistently held a leading position in the polls, remains the frontrunner as the country braces itself for a historic event that could shape its future direction.

As anticipation grows, long queues have formed outside polling stations across the country.

Turkish citizens, eager to exercise their democratic right, have shown remarkable enthusiasm and dedication, reflecting the significance of this election.

People from all walks of life have been patiently waiting in line, undeterred by the scorching sun or occasional rain showers.

Their determination to cast their votes and have their voices heard speaks volumes about the importance of this election in shaping Turkiye’s future.

However, it is not just the domestic scene that is capturing attention.

Reports of foreign meddling have surfaced, raising concerns about attempts to influence the outcome of the election.

On the election eve, President Erdogan accused the opposition of colluding with the U.S President Joe Biden to overthrow his government.

Furthermore, disinformation warfare has emerged as a significant challenge leading up to the election.

Turkish officials accused the West of pushing false narratives and misleading information on the social media platforms, with the intent to manipulate public opinion and sow confusion.

Against this backdrop, President Erdogan has been actively engaging with the public, addressing rallies, and reinforcing his message of stability, progress and national unity.

He has tapped into the deep-rooted sentiments of nationalism and religious identity, appealing to his supporters and aiming to solidify his position as a transformative leader.

Kemal Kilicdaroglu, Erdogan’s election rival and the candidate representing the Alliance Nation, a coalition of six opposition parties, maintains stronger connections with Western nations. He is widely regarded as a supporter and ally of the West.

This election marks a crucial turning point in Turkiye’s political history, characterized by the resolute determination of Turkish citizens as reflected in the long queues.

Meanwhile, the outcome of this election has the potential to shape the course of the country’s future, determining its domestic and foreign policies and influencing regional dynamics.

Apart from his strong domestic support, Erdogan’s foreign policy approach towards the Horn of Africa has significantly contributed to his popularity on the continent.

Erdogan has actively pursued an assertive foreign policy in the region, aiming to broaden Turkiye’s influence and forge robust connections with nations like Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia and Djibouti.

On the other hand, the presidential election on Sunday has witnessed an aggressive campaign by the Western media targeting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

In the Western circles, President Erdoğan has been labeled as “the next Putin,” portraying him as a populist and divisive autocrat with ambitions of building an empire.

The extensive anti-Erdoğan campaign by the Western media is evident as The Economist Magazine devoted its cover page to attack Erdoğan.

Erdoğan has made significant and transformative changes to Turkiye’s domestic politics, economy, and foreign policy.

Analysts say that reversing these changes would prove challenging,  given the formidable presence of President Erdoğan’s AK Party, which has solidified its position as a potent political force with extensive influence across society and bureaucracy.

In the meantime, President Erdoğan concluded his campaign with a visit to the Hagia Sophia Mosque in Istanbul.

He personally led the nightly prayers, captivating the audience and worshippers with his melodious recitation of the Quran in the Tawjeed style.

Under President Erdoğan’s administration, the iconic mosque, previously a museum, was converted back into a mosque. This decision drew attention and generated significant interest.

Outside the Hagia Sophia mosque, a massive gathering of hundreds of thousands of passionate supporters created an atmosphere brimming with enthusiasm and solidarity.

This display of overwhelming support once again emphasized President Erdoğan’s enduring popularity among a significant portion of the Turkish population.
