UNSC Calls for Withdrawal of Somaliland Forces from SSC-Khatumo Region

The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the recent wave of violence in Lasanod, which has resulted in the loss of civilian lives.

The council members expressed deep concern over the escalating situation and called for an immediate withdrawal of Somaliland security forces from the SSC region.

In a press statement on Thursday, the Security Council stressed the importance of holding accountable those responsible for the violations of international humanitarian law and the abuses of human rights, urging all parties involved in the conflict to cooperate fully with investigations into the violations.

In addition, the Security Council also appealed to all parties to refrain from using inflammatory rhetoric that could further exacerbate tensions and prolong the conflict.

Furthermore, the council members emphasized the need for dialogue and peaceful negotiations as the only viable path to a lasting resolution.

Despite repeated calls from the international community for an end to the violence, Somaliland troops acting under President Muse Bihi have continued to launch military attacks including artillery shelling on the town, in what characterized as a clear disregard for international appeals, hence hencing further criticism and growing concerns over the safety and well-being of the civilian population.

Last month, UN Panel of Experts released a report detailing the indiscriminate shelling of civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, and mosques, by Somaliland security forces. The report underscored the urgent need for immediate action to prevent further harm to civilians and safeguard essential community services.

In the meantime, the UN Security Council said it remains deeply committed to finding a peaceful resolution to the Laascaanod crisis and stands united in its determination to protect the rights and safety of all civilians affected by the conflict.

Several recent attempts by regional and international parties to facilitate a diplomatic resolution have failed to make breakthrough, prolonging the months-long bloody conflict.
