In a dramatic revelation, the Former Somali Spy Chief and National Security Advisor, Fahad Yasin has launched a scathing attack on a former Prime Minister, claiming that he conspired with foreign nations to undermine his boss, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, who served as the President of Somalia from 2017 to 2022 in an attempt to orchestrate a plot to seize power.
In a long open letter addressed to the current Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, Mr. Yasin despite having praised him for his allegiance to his president and warned him against following footsteps by one unnamed former prime minister whom he portrayed as a deceitful, manipulative, and pathological liar who would stop at nothing to achieve his ambitions.
According to the Former National Security Advisor, the former prime minister’s ‘overblown hunger’ for power drove him to engage in clandestine activities with foreign governments, that allegedly promised support and assistance in his bid to overthrow the current government.
However, he asserted that these actions ultimately backfired, resulting in the Former Prime Minister being used and subsequently discarded by his foreign associates.
“He has been actively engaging with foreign governments and organizations to orchestrate political subversion within the nation,” Yasin proclaimed sternly. “That grave betrayal of the president who selected him among many was an attack on our sovereignty.”
In contrast, Yasin lauded the current Prime Minister Barre’s loyalty to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his commitment to upholding the president’s vision and goals, suggesting that such steadfastness was essential for Somalia to have continued development and security.
In his letter titled ‘Don’t Eat Your Cake and Have it,’ Yasin who is known as the mastermind behind Somalia’s current security architecture, which has led to a significant reduction in militant attacks in Mogadishu in recent years reminded Mr. Barre of the importance of remaining faithful to the president, warning him against following in the footsteps of the former prime minister he hasn’t called by name, citing historical failures of prime ministers who turned against their presidents in the past.
Yasin exemplified the swift downfall of the former Prime Minister who is widely believed to be Hassan Ali Khaire, who was ousted by the parliament in a mere seven minutes in July 2020 after his alleged betrayal of then-President Farmaajo was discovered, with Yasin suggested that his disloyalty to his boss ultimately led to his demise.
“He maneuvered like no other, employing outright lies to deceive those around him,” he declared, noting the extent of Mr. Khaire’s duplicity. He further suggested that the failed plot was evidence of the former prime minister’s lack of moral character and his willingness to sacrifice the nation’s interests for personal gain.
In his letter, Yasin, an often reclusive spy operator who has rarely been seen in public highlighted the relationship between the Prime Minister and the President is a crucial aspect of Somalia’s political landscape to maintain unity and trust within the government.
“My humble advise to you is: in times of difficulty, opt for a graceful and honorable exit rather than turning against the President.” he said, citing past examples where former Prime Ministers peacefully departed without causing political turmoil.
Yasin also expressed optimism that by fully supporting the President’s vision and policies for the nation, the Prime Minister would enjoy a successful tenure.
Meanwhile, the former Intelligence Chief’s public denunciation of Mr. Khaire has cast a shadow over long-running speculations regarding his close ties with the former Prime Minister.
Khaire, then a humanitarian worker and political novice was long rumoured to have secured the prime minister’s position with an assistance of Yasin.
