The timing of this crucial diplomatic mission to Eritrea, though not the first but the fourth such a visit by Mr. Mohamud since he was elected as the Somali President for the second time is significant hence raising eyebrows among regional observers and diplomats.
The backdrop of President Mohamud’s visit is marked by growing frustrations within Somalia over Somali National Army’s recent significant military setbacks against the al-Shabab insurgency with subsequent pleas for argent support from regional partners particularly Djibouti, a close ally fell on deaf ears.
These reversals in military fortunes which amplified the growing concerns over al-Shabab resurgence had cast doubts on the sustainability of the anti-al-Shabab military offensive.
