MOGADISHU — Talks between Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed came to a standstill, amid a dispute over the recent controversial outcome of Somalia’s National Consultative Council (NCC).
The decisions that shifted the country from the old electoral system to popular elections also sought to extend the terms of President Mohamed and Federal Member State leaders, drawing significant criticism and opposition from across the political spectrum.
According to cedible sources, who spoke to the Horn Examiner on condition of anonymity, the talks, which took place at the Villa Somalia, Somalia’s presidential palace on Sunday evening and lasted for several hours, reached an impasse as Sharif adamantly rejected to support the president’s proposal for a one-year extension of his term.
Despite having received significant incentive offers in exchange for his backing, for the controversial extension plan, he remained steadfast in maintaining his position, they said.
Meanwhile, Sharif, an influential political figure in Somalia who commands large public and political support has emerged as one of the most vocal leaders opposing the proposed term extension plan, describing it as unconstitutional.
Seen as one of most important political leaders that could pose a formidable challenge towards president Mohamud’s bid for term extension, the former Somali President has also warned that such a move would not only spark a political crisis but also risk plunging the nation into another cycle of civil unrest.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Sharif is expected provide updates and briefings today via Zoom to various opposition groups that have earlier issued statements challenging the NCC’s communique.
According to officials privy with the talks, President Mohamud has extended an offer to Sharif to serve as the IGAD Peace Envoy as part of a political settlement, a proposal, Sharif has subsequently pushed back.
In light of the political pressure facing his plan, President Mohamud has reportedly made a commitment to personally meet with all opposition leaders after the upcoming Eid Al-Adha, In an effort to address their concerns.
