Eritrea President Isaias Afwerki, who embarked on an official visit to Moscow, held extensive discussions with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Wednesday.

The high-level talks in Moscow focused on bolstering bilateral relations and addressing pressing global issues, with President Afwerki expressed his satisfaction with the visit, highlighting the strengthened partnership between Eritrea and Russia.

During the meeting, the two leaders engaged in deliberations on a wide range of topics, including economic cooperation, regional stability and shared security concerns, recognizing the importance of enhancing bilateral ties and reaffirmed their commitment to fostering mutually beneficial relationships.

The visit of President Afwerki to Russia holds significant potential for Eritrea, which has been grappling with decades of isolation and sanctions imposed by Western nations.

As a result, the country has faced challenges in attracting foreign investment and establishing robust trade relationships, Russia’s support could prove instrumental in bolstering Eritrea’s economic growth.

As Russia seeks to expand its influence on the African continent, Eritrea’s potential for economic development and its strategic location along the Red Sea make it an attractive partner.

While the exact details of the agreements reached during the meeting are yet to be disclosed, the visit serves as a significant step towards diversifying Eritrea’s international alliances and finding solutions to the challenges it faces.

The sanctions by the West has hindered Eritrea’s access to international markets and financial resources, making it difficult for the nation to achieve its developmental goals.

By engaging in discussions with Russia, President Afwerki aims to diversify Eritrea’s economic partnerships and reduce its reliance on Western nations.

According to a statement by the Eritrean Government, President Afwerki emphasized the significance of the visit as a symbol of the longstanding robust partnership between the two nations.

He also expressed his gratitude for Russia’s continuous support in various sectors, including infrastructure development and capacity-building initiatives.

During their lengthy talks, the leaders also addressed global issues of common interest and expressed their shared commitment to promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development on the international stage.

The talks culminated in the signing of several agreements aimed at deepening cooperation between Eritrea and Russia.

In a joint statement issued after the meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of mutual respect, sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of other nations. They also stressed the importance of adhering to international law and promoting dialogue as the preferred approach to resolving conflicts.

President Isaias concluded his visit by conveying his optimism about the future prospects of Eritrea- Russia relations, expressing confidence that the strengthened partnership would yield significant benefits for both nations.
